How to Calculate True Amazon Net Profit (Not Just Sales)

Sales revenue is not profit

Many Amazon sellers track ordered product sales and call it success. True Amazon net profit is what remains after product cost, inbound freight, marketplace fees, fulfillment, storage allocations, advertising, returns, and a share of overhead. Until those costs sit on the same worksheet as revenue, you cannot know whether a SKU should scale, pause, or exit.

The net profit formula sellers actually need

Use one consistent period (for example, one calendar month) and one currency:

Estimated net contribution = Net selling revenue − Product cost − Inbound & packaging − Marketplace fees − Fulfillment / delivery − Storage allocation − Advertising − Returns & refunds allowance − Other variable costs

Then: Contribution margin % = Estimated net contribution ÷ Net selling revenue × 100. Subtract unallocated overhead (tools, salaries, rent) separately when you need full business P&L — do not bury overhead inside a single SKU unless you have a clear allocation rule.

Step 1: Lock the basis

  • Choose SKU, marketplace, currency, and date range before you pull numbers.
  • Prefer settlement or financial reports over “ordered revenue” when reconciling cash.
  • Do not mix tax-inclusive prices with tax-exclusive costs.

Step 2: List every cost once

Common gaps that inflate “profit”:

  • Referral and closing fees treated as optional
  • FBA fulfillment or merchant-fulfilled shipping omitted
  • PPC spend tracked only at account level, never per ASIN
  • Return rate assumed at 0% because last month was quiet
  • Storage or aged-inventory fees ignored until the bill arrives

Step 3: Work an illustrative SKU

Assume net selling revenue of 1,000, product cost 400, marketplace fees 150, fulfillment 100, packaging 20, advertising 80, returns allowance 30. Estimated contribution = 220 (22% margin) before overhead and tax. Raise ads to 130 and contribution falls to 170 (17%). That sensitivity test matters more than a single “good looking” month.

Step 4: Stress-test before you reorder

  1. What if sale price drops 5%?
  2. What if ACoS doubles for 30 days?
  3. What if return rate rises from 3% to 8%?

If contribution collapses under realistic stress, do not treat yesterday’s sales spike as a green light for inventory.

Step 5: Reconcile estimates with connected records

Estimates help planning; posted settlements prove what happened. Compare your worksheet with supported financial views in AI Listers Profit Dashboard, then fix missing product costs, late refunds, and mismatched date ranges. Settlement cash and per-order profit can differ because timing and adjustments differ.

Practical checklist

  • One SKU, one period, one currency
  • All fee and fulfillment lines entered once
  • Advertising and returns allocated deliberately
  • Margin stress-tested
  • Worksheet reconciled to connected P&L where available
